John Smith Recognized as BCHL Equipment Manager of the Year

Victoria, BC ~ The BCHL announced on Friday afternoon that Grizzlies Equipment Manager, John Smith, has been recognized as the league EM of the year.

John is entering his 15th year with the Grizzlies, and he is the unsung hero behind much of the work that goes unnoticed. “I was honored just to be nominated,” said Smith. “It means everything to receive this recognition from my peers. This is only possible because of everyone I work with, including equipment support staff Mike and Declan. We are given so much leeway, and I am thankful for the trust and responsibility our leadership group has placed in me.”

“While I haven’t had the opportunity to work with John for long, his dedication to the players and the organization is evident. It is always gratifying to see those who work behind the scenes recognized for their efforts, because without people like John Smith, the BCHL wouldn’t be the league that it is,” remarked Grizzlies President David Michaud.

John, or “Smitty” as he is affectionately known around the rink, is often the first to arrive and the last to leave. His dedication is evident on the road as well, with early mornings and trips to do laundry, and to get supplies if needed in enemy territory.

“The late Al Gillies was revered as the best of the best. Not only was Al my best friend, but he taught me everything I know,” said John when asked about his inspiration and influences. Al also said the rink has to be somewhere that you can’t wait to get to everyday and you have to help to create that environment for everyone.

“I am so excited about the vision of our new ownership, as well we have so many high-caliber athletes returning, and knowing what great people they are makes me even more excited for the upcoming season,” John concluded.

Thank you for your dedication to our family, John!
